Former President Donald Trump has publicly criticized former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's decision to suspend the debt ceiling in 2023, labeling it a significant political blunder. Despite this criticism, Trump referred to McCarthy as a "good man and a friend."
Trump expressed his disapproval on social media, stating the decision offered no benefits and ultimately contributed to McCarthy's loss of the speakership. He emphasized that the debt ceiling issue should have been addressed during the Biden administration, assigning responsibility to the Democrats.

The debt ceiling was suspended until January 1, 2025, as part of a deal enacted last year. However, Trump has advocated for an increase before he assumes office. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned Congress about the need to address the debt limit to maintain the nation's financial standing.

Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance previously urged for the debt ceiling to be raised within a stopgap spending proposal, arguing it should be handled during the Biden administration. However, the final measure did not incorporate this increase.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) pointed out on social media that a limited number of House Republicans opposed the debt ceiling extension 18 months prior. He suggested addressing the debt ceiling through reconciliation in January, coupled with significant spending cuts.
