The Uniformed Firefighters Association has announced the passing of two firefighters due to illnesses linked to their service during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Firefighter Thomas Dunn of Engine 234 in Brooklyn succumbed to a World Trade Center-related illness, just days after the passing of Retired Battalion Chief Dennis Collopy, who also battled a 9/11-related cancer.

Dunn's colleagues shared their grief and memories, recalling his bravery and professionalism, even as a recent Academy graduate, during the South Tower's collapse. A private service will be held in Florida to honor his memory. Dunn's brother, firefighter Jimmy Dunn, also passed away eight years ago from a 9/11 related illness.

Collopy, a 36-year FDNY veteran and U.S. Army veteran, served until his retirement in 2002. He is remembered as a dedicated firefighter and family man, survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. A funeral mass was held in West Nyack, New York.

These recent deaths bring the total number of firefighters who have died from 9/11-related illnesses to over 370. These illnesses range from various cancers to respiratory problems and PTSD, often attributed to the toxic dust cloud that engulfed the area following the towers' collapse.
