Students at the University of Minnesota (UM) are protesting the administration's decision to comply with federal immigration enforcement orders. The student group, Students for a Democratic Society (SFDS), organized a demonstration at the Coffman Student Union, demanding the university become a "sanctuary campus" and threatening to "shut it down" if their demands aren't met. They argue that the university's stance contradicts Minneapolis's designation as a sanctuary city.
The protest comes after the Trump administration rescinded an earlier executive order that limited ICE raids in sensitive locations like schools and hospitals. SFDS members expressed concern over the impact of this policy shift on undocumented students, highlighting the university's responsibility to protect its vulnerable student population.

Students carried signs with messages such as "no human is illegal" and "Students Against The Racist Reactionary Republican Agenda." Chants included "Up, up with liberation. Down, down with deportation." Some students shared personal stories about their immigrant backgrounds and expressed anxieties about the university's cooperation with ICE.

A petition circulating among students, faculty, and community members urges the university to resist federal immigration actions and has gathered over 3,000 signatures. However, as a federally funded institution, UM has stated it must comply with federal court orders and subpoenas. The university has released a memo offering guidance to community members affected by immigration policies.

Several students interviewed expressed disappointment and concern over the university's stance. Some voiced understanding of the university's legal obligations but called for a more lenient approach, especially considering the presence of international students on campus. Others criticized the university for prioritizing funding over student well-being. The University of Minnesota declined to comment on the situation to Fox News Digital.
