Utah Mom Accused of Husband's Murder Googled 'Luxury Prisons for the Rich'

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

Kouri Richins, a Utah mother of three and children's book author, is facing murder charges after allegedly poisoning her husband, Eric Richins, with fentanyl in March 2022. Newly released court documents reveal that following her husband's death, Richins searched online for information about "luxury prisons for the rich," raising further suspicions in the ongoing investigation.

Prosecutors contend that Richins administered the fatal dose of fentanyl to her husband while their three young sons slept. After discovering her husband's body, she reportedly told police, "He didn't just die in his sleep." Richins was denied bail during a recent court appearance.

Investigators gained access to Richins' phone and uncovered a series of Google searches that they believe implicate her in the crime. These searches, some containing typos, included phrases like "how long does life insurance take to pay," "can deleted text messages be retrieved," "what is considered a lethal dose of fentanyl," and inquiries about her husband's family's law enforcement connections. Richins' defense attorney argues that these searches were simply responses to the ongoing investigation and not evidence of guilt.

Further complicating the case are allegations that Richins attempted to collect on her husband's life insurance policies, totaling nearly $2 million, which she had allegedly made herself the beneficiary of without his knowledge. Eric Richins had reportedly removed his wife from his will prior to his death, naming his sister as the beneficiary instead, and expressed concerns about his safety after previous alleged poisoning attempts by Kouri.

The couple reportedly clashed over finances, particularly regarding the purchase of a $2 million mansion. Eric Richins considered the purchase too extravagant, while Kouri, a real estate agent, intended to flip the property for profit. She ultimately closed on the mansion the day after her husband's death.
