Utah News Anchors Feel "Duped" After Interviewing Children's Book Author Accused of Murder

Created: JANUARY 20, 2025

Two Utah news anchors express feelings of deception and disgust after interviewing Kouri Richins, a mother and children's book author now facing murder charges for the death of her husband last year. Deena Manzanares and Surae Chinn, hosts of KTVX's "Good Things Utah," interviewed Richins in March to discuss her children's book, "Are You With Me?" which focuses on coping with loss. The book, marketed on Amazon for $14.99, was described as a resource for children dealing with grief.

Despite Richins' enthusiastic email correspondence with the show, the hosts found her demeanor during the interview to be surprisingly detached. Manzanares and Chinn aimed to present their guest positively, but both noted a distinct lack of emotion from Richins. When questioned about her husband's death, Richins attributed it to COVID-related lung complications, a claim that directly contradicts the prosecution's case.

Prosecutors allege that Richins poisoned her husband, Eric Richins, with fentanyl following a financial dispute over a $2 million property. The incident occurred on March 3, 2022. Transcripts from the following day, when authorities responded to Richins' 911 call, reveal she told deputies her family had recently recovered from COVID and expressed disbelief at her husband's sudden passing.

Manzanares and Chinn were struck by Richins' composed demeanor given the circumstances, especially her ability to write a book, care for her children, and promote her work while supposedly grieving. Following the April broadcast, the show received an anonymous email alleging Richins' involvement in her husband's death. Initially dismissed as unusual but not overly concerning, the email gained significance when Manzanares received a Facebook message echoing the same accusation. The charges against Richins, announced in May, left the hosts stunned.

Chinn expressed feeling deeply disturbed by the realization that Richins had presented herself as a grieving widow on their show while potentially concealing her involvement in her husband’s death. Chinn also raised the possibility that Richins might have been aware of her status as a suspect during the interview, given prior questioning and searches by authorities.

Manzanares voiced her bewilderment at Richins’ behavior, questioning the psychological factors that could lead someone to act in such a manner. Richins is accused of poisoning her husband's drink with fentanyl while celebrating a house sale. The following day, she reportedly finalized the deal on the property alone, after her husband's death. Richins was denied bail during a court hearing.
