The Buffalo Zoo joyfully welcomed four new additions earlier this month: a litter of African lion cubs! Born to experienced parents, Lusaka and Tiberius, the two male and two female cubs arrived on June 2nd and 3rd. This marks the pair's third successful litter since 2016, a testament to the zoo's participation in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' species survival plan for these magnificent animals.

Currently weighing approximately seven pounds each, the cubs are thriving under their mother's care. While not yet visible to the public, the zoo is excited to eventually introduce these bundles of fur to visitors. Interim Zoo President Lisa Smith expressed her enthusiasm, highlighting the significance of these births not only for the zoo but also for the broader conservation efforts to protect African lions in their natural habitat.
African lions are classified as a vulnerable species due to a combination of threats, including habitat destruction, poaching, and the illegal wildlife trade. With a global population estimated at less than 40,000, every birth contributes to the long-term survival of this iconic species. The Buffalo Zoo's commitment to breeding these lions underscores the importance of collaborative conservation initiatives.
