Whistleblowers Allege DOJ Interference in Hunter Biden Investigation

Created: JANUARY 18, 2025

Congressional testimony from two IRS whistleblowers alleges interference by Justice Department, FBI, and IRS officials in the Hunter Biden tax evasion investigation. Gary Shapley Jr., the IRS supervisor of the investigation, claimed that decisions throughout the probe seemed politically motivated and favored the president's son. He cited instances where inquiries related to President Biden were reportedly discouraged, despite objections from investigators.

One example involves an email discussing "remuneration packages" and mentioning "10 held by H for the big guy." Shapley testified that Assistant U.S. Attorney Lesley Wolf advised against questioning about "the big guy" or "dad," terms allegedly referencing President Biden. This directive reportedly frustrated FBI agents as well.

Further allegations include claims that a search warrant for Hunter Biden's residence was blocked despite probable cause, and that his defense counsel was alerted about a storage unit containing potentially relevant documents, hindering the investigation. Shapley also testified about an attempt to bypass Wolf's instructions by asking questions related to President Biden without using the specific terms "big guy" or "dad."

These revelations coincide with Hunter Biden's plea deal involving two misdemeanor tax charges and a pretrial diversion agreement for a firearm possession charge. The Justice Department maintains that U.S. Attorney David Weiss has full authority over the case, while the White House denies President Biden's involvement in his son's business dealings.
