Former "Home Improvement" star Zachery Ty Bryan recently discussed the 2020 domestic violence incident involving his then-girlfriend, now partner and mother of his three children, Johnnie Faye Cartwright, minimizing the altercation in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Bryan, who pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges after initially facing more serious accusations including strangulation and coercion, characterized the event as a "learning experience" that wasn't as physical as reported. He attributed the loud argument to the thin walls of their townhome and stated that Cartwright was "really upset" about his "situation" at the time.

Police reports from the incident, however, paint a different picture, indicating Bryan assaulted Cartwright, restricted her breathing, and confiscated her phone when she attempted to call 911. Bryan countered these claims in the police report, alleging Cartwright attacked him and was attempting to sabotage his career. He recounted hearing her tell dispatch that he was the "guy from 'Home Improvement,'" emphasizing his celebrity status.

Bryan also opened up about his struggles with alcohol, acknowledging an "issue with drinking" that began at age 14. While he refrained from labeling himself an alcoholic, he detailed a history of DUI arrests spanning from 2004 to 2020. He credits a shift to a sober lifestyle and a change in routine for helping him manage his drinking. Bryan reflected on the difficulties he faced transitioning from child star to adult actor, describing the stigma against television actors in film. He ultimately transitioned to producing, citing a desire for greater control over his career.

Tim Allen, Bryan's on-screen father in "Home Improvement," expressed uncertainty about Bryan's recent struggles, acknowledging the actor's transformation from "a great kid" to "a complex man." He emphasized his inability to control or influence Bryan's personal journey.
