Biden Administration Accused of Pushing 'Woke' AI Agenda

Created: JANUARY 18, 2025

Concerns are rising over the Biden administration's approach to artificial intelligence, with accusations of promoting a progressive ideology through AI initiatives. A report by the American Accountability Foundation (AAF) alleges that left-leaning activists are influencing the government's AI strategy, injecting "dangerous ideologies" into AI systems. The AAF contends that under the guise of combating algorithmic bias, the administration is manipulating AI to align with specific political viewpoints.

The AAF points to several instances as evidence, including the White House's "Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights." This document cautions against algorithmic discrimination, where AI systems differentiate based on demographics like race or gender. It advocates for data scrutiny to mitigate bias and recommends "proactive equity assessments" during system design. AAF President Tom Jones criticizes the administration for relying on "racially obsessed social academics and activists" rather than scientists for tech policy advice, fearing this could amplify the influence of a "tech/woke alliance."

Further, the AAF highlights President Biden's executive order aimed at eliminating bias in new technologies, including AI. They also cite the National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan, released by the White House's Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence, which calls for resources to address "harmful biases" and the tendency of AI systems to "hallucinate" and perpetuate biases from training data. This committee operates under the National Science and Technology Council, led by Vice President Kamala Harris, who Biden appointed to spearhead responsible AI innovation.

The AAF also raises concerns about Miriam Vogel, chair of the National AI Advisory Committee, and her role as president and CEO of EqualAI, a non-profit focused on reducing bias in AI. EqualAI stresses regular bias checks for AI, particularly in customer-facing systems, due to their potential to learn new biases from data. The National AI Advisory Committee's report emphasizes Biden's commitment to eradicating algorithmic discrimination and defines "trustworthy AI" as being fair and free of harmful bias.

This debate comes amid growing discussions about AI regulation, spurred by the rise of tools like ChatGPT. Figures like Elon Musk have voiced warnings about the potential for AI to be exploited for political manipulation through misinformation. The AAF's report represents the first phase of their investigation into "woke" AI, promising further revelations to come. The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment.
