Boston Subway Service Disrupted by Train Malfunction

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

A morning commute on Boston's Red Line was disrupted Thursday due to a malfunctioning train component. Around 6 a.m., the operator of a northbound train at the Charles/MGH Station noticed smoke originating from beneath the train car, prompting passengers to evacuate the station. No injuries were reported.

While firefighters at the scene initially described the incident as a small fire under the train, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) later clarified that there were no confirmed flames. The smoke was attributed to an issue with an air compressor control box on the train itself. Adding to the challenge, the platform's water supply system malfunctioned, forcing firefighters to manually transport water to address the situation.

As a result of the incident, Red Line service was temporarily suspended, with shuttle buses providing alternative transportation while the affected train was removed. Service resumed around 8 a.m., although trains initially bypassed the Charles/MGH Station, which is anticipated to reopen later in the day.

This incident comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the MBTA, which has faced a string of operational challenges and accidents in recent years, leading to federal oversight.
