A Minnesota high school shop class is getting a dose of real-world practicality thanks to its teacher, Rob Van Der Hagen, who brings decades of business experience to his role at BOLD High School. Van Der Hagen transitioned to teaching after the pandemic, following a career owning auto parts stores. He believes that preparing students for the demands of professional life requires more than theoretical knowledge.

"It's crucial for these students, who will soon be entering the workforce, to understand what's expected on the job," Van Der Hagen explained on Fox & Friends Weekend. "Our shop class mirrors real-world conditions. Students are treated like professionals, with an emphasis on perfection, customer satisfaction, and meeting deadlines."

Van Der Hagen's approach has resonated with his students. Austin Schroeder, a rising senior, shared, "This class truly prepares me for a future career. There's a focus on timely and accurate completion of tasks. Mr. Van Der Hagen provides guidance when needed but also challenges us, which is invaluable."

Another student, Tate Sheehan, also a rising senior, came into the class with limited experience. He commented, "The practical application in this class has exceeded my expectations. It's less about following prescribed steps and more about finding solutions. Mr. Van Der Hagen is always there to support us, but he encourages independent problem-solving."

To further enhance the real-world connection, Van Der Hagen actively seeks projects from the local community. "If we're ever short on projects, a quick online post brings a flood of work," he noted. "I regret not keeping a precise count of the projects, vehicles, snowmobiles, and ATVs we've worked on this year. The number is substantial, likely approaching 100."
