Bill Introduced to Expedite Trump's Government Reorganization Plans

Created: JANUARY 05, 2025

Representatives James Comer and Senator Mike Lee have introduced a bipartisan bill designed to accelerate the implementation of President Trump's plans for restructuring the federal government. The Reorganizing Government Act of 2025 mandates a congressional up-or-down vote on these plans within 90 days, using a streamlined process resistant to filibusters. The proposed legislation also broadens presidential authority to encompass entire executive departments, not just agencies, while prohibiting any reorganization that would expand the federal workforce or budget.

Comer emphasized the need to address bureaucratic bloat and inefficiency, aiming to improve service delivery and save taxpayer money. He highlighted the bill as a crucial tool to expedite President Trump's reorganization plans and enhance government accountability. Senator Lee echoed this sentiment, stating that the bill empowers the president to eliminate weaponization within agencies and optimize the government's structure for better public service. He stressed the urgency of this effort and the importance of presidential reorganization authority in restoring effective governance.

This bill arrives amidst a growing concern over the expansion of the federal government, which Republicans argue has created inefficiencies and bureaucratic hurdles. It aligns with the White House's push to reduce the size and cost of the federal government, an initiative President Trump began on his first day in office. Trump appointed Elon Musk to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), tasked with minimizing government waste, shrinking the federal workforce, and cutting expenses. The Office of Personnel Management offered federal employees voluntary resignation packages with full pay and benefits, resulting in the departure of at least 75,000 workers.

DOGE has also terminated millions of dollars in government contracts deemed wasteful, targeting agreements within the Social Security Administration, the Departments of Homeland Security and Labor, and other areas. These actions demonstrate the administration's commitment to streamlining government operations and reducing unnecessary spending.
