Border Explosion Injures Hezbollah Members Near Israel; Tensions Rise

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

A recent explosion close to the Lebanon-Israel border resulted in minor injuries to at least three members of the Hezbollah group, according to a Lebanese security official. The injured individuals were transported to a nearby hospital in the village of Bustan, located in southern Lebanon.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) released a statement indicating that several individuals approached the security fence along the border and attempted to sabotage it. Soldiers responded to the incident, forcing the individuals to retreat. Surveillance footage released by the IDF shows four people in civilian clothing approaching the fence and then fleeing after an explosion. The IDF stated that the identities of the individuals are unknown.

Later reports indicated that Israeli soldiers used a stun grenade during the incident. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that the army "deterred activists with nonlethal means" and added, "Anyone who tries us will get an answer. We have a lot to do and we will know how to do what is needed at the right time."

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) confirmed they were investigating the situation and described the situation as “extremely severe,” urging all parties to avoid actions that could escalate tensions.

This incident occurred just hours before Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was scheduled to deliver a speech commemorating the start of the 2006 month-long war between Israel and Hezbollah.

Adding to the existing tensions, Lebanese officials have reported that Israel has recently constructed a wall around the Lebanese portion of Ghajar, a border town situated between Lebanon and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Lebanon's foreign minister has requested that the country's permanent mission to the United Nations lodge a formal complaint regarding this construction.

In June, Israel filed its own complaint with the UN, alleging that Hezbollah had established tents within Israeli territory in the Chebaa Farms and Kfar Chouba hills area. The purpose of the tents and their contents remain unclear. This area, captured by Israel from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed in 1981, is claimed by Lebanon.

Israel views Hezbollah as a significant threat, estimating the group possesses a substantial arsenal of rockets and missiles targeted at Israel.
