Strengthening the US-UK Special Relationship in the Trump Era

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

The return of Donald Trump to the presidency generates significant anticipation and carries substantial implications for global affairs. Both allies and rivals are closely monitoring the situation and reevaluating their relationships with the United States. Trump's "America First" platform centers on a powerful and respected America, promoting peace through strength. It's crucial for America's allies to understand the message sent by the American electorate and adjust their partnerships accordingly, collaborating with the U.S. to uphold shared interests.

Trump's decisive election victory, reflected in both popular vote and diverse demographics, indicates a campaign that resonated with a broad spectrum of the American public. His political prowess lies in connecting with segments of the electorate who feel overlooked. This capacity to forge a nationwide coalition is essential for political triumph.

This victory resonates with many hardworking Americans facing economic challenges, communities grappling with rising costs and immigration concerns, and those who perceive diminishing opportunities for their children. These are individuals who feel their worries have been disregarded or even dismissed by conventional politics.

Effective leadership involves listening to the electorate and understanding the needs of the people. International alliances must adopt a similar approach. Foreign relations need to acknowledge these concerns and adapt swiftly to effectively serve their citizens. The Atlantic alliance cannot solely rely on its past achievements; it must evolve to address emerging threats and technological advancements.

As the incoming steward of the enduring US-UK special relationship, I recognize the significance of collaboration with past U.S. administrations, both Republican and Democrat. I identify three key areas with significant potential for enhanced collaboration between Britain and the current U.S. administration: economic progress, national security, and pragmatic foreign policy.

London, England

The US and UK are widely recognized as the closest defense and intelligence allies globally. This collaboration is vital for the security of millions. However, these national security partnerships must be more transparent in how they ensure public safety.

Prudent European governments will be carefully considering their defense collaboration with the U.S. While Europe has made substantial contributions to defending against Russian aggression, investing heavily in Ukraine, Americans are justified in questioning whether NATO allies can contribute more to alleviate the disproportionate burden on the U.S.

The UK has spearheaded efforts to encourage NATO allies to boost their defense spending and will continue to advocate for partners to meet their financial obligations.

Economic growth and improved living standards are paramount for the UK government. The US and UK are each other's biggest investors, with substantial mutual investment. Our businesses generate numerous jobs in each other's countries, and we maintain a robust and balanced trade relationship. As two of the few Western nations with trillion-dollar tech sectors, we should collaborate further to innovate and develop future technologies.

We are eager to expand trade and innovation with America, focusing on creating quality, well-paying jobs for all citizens and maintaining a competitive edge globally.

Finally, we must operate within the realities of the current global landscape. Many of our adversaries have grown bolder. Iran, despite recent setbacks, remains a destabilizing force in the region, and its nuclear ambitions must be thwarted. The Chinese government has become increasingly assertive internationally and more controlling domestically, posing a direct challenge to Western values.

Trump's direct communication style resonated with voters and secured him a decisive victory. Allies should view his straightforward approach and deal-making experience in international affairs as an opportunity to inject entrepreneurial thinking and urgency into foreign policy challenges that demand practical solutions.

The Trump administration will prioritize American interests, but in its closest allies, it will find long-standing partners receptive to new approaches in navigating the current global landscape – to safeguard, enhance, and create opportunities for both Americans and their respective citizens.
