Ex-Mother-in-Law of Fugitive Murder Suspect Expresses Fear, Recalls Similarities to Past Crime

Nancy Hayworth, the mother of James Joseph Olejniczak Jr., who was killed by Yolanda Marodi in 2000, has spoken out about her fear of Marodi, now a suspect in the murder of her wife, Cal Fire Captain Rebecca Marodi. Hayworth, in an interview with KGTV, described Marodi as “scary” and drew parallels between her son's death and Rebecca's recent murder. Both victims were fatally stabbed.

Hayworth recounted a single meeting with Marodi, characterizing her as immature and attention-seeking. Marodi served over 13 years for voluntary manslaughter in Olejniczak's death, a sentence Hayworth felt was inadequate. “How could someone take someone’s life and only be in [prison] a few years… and my son will never have that?” she questioned.

Rebecca Marodi's death occurred nearly 25 years after Olejniczak's. KABC obtained an arrest warrant revealing that Rebecca had informed Yolanda of her intention to end their marriage a week prior to the murder. The confrontation, captured on home surveillance, reportedly recorded Rebecca pleading, “Yolanda, please, I don’t want to die.” According to the report, Yolanda allegedly replied, “You should have thought about that before,” while holding what appeared to be a knife.

Yolanda Marodi is currently being sought by the San Diego Sheriff's Office. She is believed to be driving a silver 2013 Chevrolet Equinox with California license plate 8BQJ420, possibly accompanied by a small white dog. Authorities suspect she may have fled to Mexico, with a reported border crossing by her vehicle. The Sheriff's Office has notified authorities on both sides of the border.
