FBI Renews Focus on Iranian Officials in Robert Levinson Disappearance

Created: JANUARY 16, 2025

The FBI has reasserted its commitment to finding answers in the long-standing disappearance of former FBI special agent Robert Levinson, who vanished in Iran in 2007. New posters highlighting two Iranian intelligence officers, Mohammed Baseri and Ahmad Khazai, have been released, emphasizing the agency's determination to hold those responsible accountable.

Levinson's family expressed their gratitude for the FBI's continued efforts, stating, "We will never give up. We want answers. We demand answers. Someone, somewhere, knows something, and we demand that those responsible are held accountable." They believe individuals possess information crucial to understanding Levinson's fate and seek justice for their family.

Mohammad Baseri and Ahmad Khazai

The FBI alleges that Baseri and Khazai, acting as officials within Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security, played a role in Levinson's abduction, detention, and likely death. Special Agent in Charge Sanjay Virmani of the FBI's Washington Field Office Counterterrorism Division affirmed the agency's dedication to bringing Levinson home and pursuing all leads to hold every Iranian official involved accountable.

For almost two decades, the Iranian government has denied any involvement in Levinson's disappearance, despite the FBI's assertion that senior intelligence officials authorized his abduction and initiated a disinformation campaign to deflect responsibility.

Both Baseri and Khazai were sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2020. The FBI identifies Baseri as having been involved in counterespionage activities both within and outside of Iran, including sensitive investigations tied to national security matters. He is also alleged to have collaborated with foreign intelligence officials to undermine U.S. interests. Khazai, according to the FBI, has led Ministry of Intelligence and Security delegations to other countries for security assessments.
