Twelve dogs, including a former shelter resident named Rex, were recently sworn in as K-9 officers for the Georgia State Patrol and Georgia Capitol Police. The heartwarming ceremony, held at the governor's mansion, was attended by First Lady Marty Kemp, a passionate animal advocate instrumental in Rex's journey from shelter life to law enforcement.

Three-year-old German Shepherd Rex, discovered in a Georgia animal shelter by a friend of Mrs. Kemp, has already proven his worth on the force. Stationed in Tifton, Rex has assisted Trooper First Class Gustabo Deanda in 15 drug arrests and the seizure of three firearms. Deanda shared that Rex is not only a dedicated partner on the job but also a cherished member of his family, enjoying the comforts of his own "bedroom" at their home.

The graduation ceremony was a lively affair, with the canine graduates exhibiting their enthusiasm through barks, yelps, and playful tugs at their leashes. Mrs. Kemp, clearly delighted by the occasion, ensured each new K-9 officer received a celebratory box of treats.

While support for law enforcement can be a divisive issue, the appreciation for K-9 officers remains strong across party lines. A recently enacted Georgia law, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, increases the penalties for harming police or search and rescue dogs. This legislation honors Figo, a state police K-9 tragically killed in the line of duty while apprehending a murder suspect in October 2022.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety has seen a significant increase in its K-9 unit, growing from 18 dogs in 2021 to a projected 51 by 2024. The state primarily purchases dogs for the program but is also exploring the potential of rescue dogs, like Rex, at the encouragement of Mrs. Kemp. These dogs undergo rigorous training, ranging from six weeks for drug and explosives detection to twelve weeks for tracking and apprehension.

Rex's success story underscores the valuable contributions shelter dogs can make to law enforcement. Mrs. Kemp, whose family includes two German Shepherds of their own, expressed pride in Rex's accomplishments, highlighting his journey from a shelter dog to a vital member of the Georgia State Patrol.
