Joe Mixon Restructures Contract, Remains with Bengals Amid Legal Concerns

Created: JANUARY 04, 2025

Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon has agreed to a restructured contract, securing his spot on the team for a seventh season. Mixon's agent confirmed the agreement, which comes as the Pro Bowl running back faces a misdemeanor aggravated menacing charge with a trial set for next month. The charge, initially dismissed in February, was refiled in April and stems from a January road rage incident where Mixon allegedly pointed a gun at a woman. Cincinnati police have emphasized their commitment to a thorough investigation.

Mixon, a mainstay with the Bengals throughout his NFL tenure, played 14 games in the 2022 season, accumulating 814 yards and seven touchdowns despite missing two games due to a concussion. His 2021 season was a standout, marked by a career-high 1,205 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns, and a Pro Bowl selection. The previous salary cap hit had cast uncertainty over his future with the team.

The Bengals drafted running back Chase Brown in the fifth round of the April draft. Mixon participated in both voluntary and mandatory team workouts amidst the ongoing legal proceedings. He briefly addressed the situation in April, stating, "Year 7, back at it." The incident in question reportedly took place roughly 24 hours before the Bengals' playoff game against the Buffalo Bills. Mixon has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
