Tensions flared at Wimbledon on Sunday following Elina Svitolina's thrilling three-set victory over Victoria Azarenka. The match concluded with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (11) scoreline in Svitolina's favor, but the real drama unfolded after the final point. Azarenka, of Belarus, immediately headed towards the umpire's chair, anticipating Svitolina's refusal to shake hands. This has become common practice for Svitolina, a Ukrainian player, in matches against Belarusian and Russian opponents. As Azarenka prepared to exit the court, the crowd's disapproval became evident through a chorus of boos.

Following the incident, Azarenka expressed her confusion and frustration, stating, "I can’t control the crowd. I’m not sure many understood the situation. It wasn't fair, but what can I do?" She emphasized her past positive relationship with Svitolina and reiterated her respect for Svitolina's decision. "She’s chosen not to shake hands with players from Russia and Belarus. I respected that. What was I supposed to do? Linger and wait? There was no right course of action, so I did what I felt was respectful of her choice."

Svitolina, in her post-match comments, called on tennis governing bodies to issue a clear statement regarding the absence of handshakes between Ukrainian players and those from Russia and Belarus. She believes this would clarify the situation for fans and prevent similar incidents in the future. "I think the tennis organizations need to officially announce that there won't be handshakes between Ukrainian and Russian/Belarusian players," Svitolina explained. "Some people might not be fully aware of the ongoing circumstances. This is the correct way to handle it."

With this victory under her belt, Svitolina is set to face world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
