Created: JANUARY 16, 2025

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass recently shared a personal connection to the devastating Palisades wildfires, revealing that her brother's Malibu home was destroyed in the blaze. During a virtual meeting with the Pacific Palisades Community Council, Mayor Bass expressed her shared grief with the community, stating that the loss has deeply affected her family. She described the home as a cherished place for family gatherings and holidays, emphasizing the lasting emotional impact of its destruction.

Fires and LA mayor

The Palisades Fire, which ignited on January 7th, has consumed over 23,000 acres, claimed 11 lives, and destroyed more than 900 structures. As of Friday morning, Cal Fire reported the fire as 72% contained. Other active fires in the region include the Eaton Fire, now 95% contained after burning 14,000 acres, and the Hughes Fire, which has scorched over 10,000 acres and is currently 56% contained.

Mayor Bass's handling of the crisis has drawn criticism, particularly her trip abroad during the initial fire warnings. She was part of a presidential delegation in Ghana for the inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama when the fires began. The National Weather Service had issued warnings about extreme fire weather conditions days before her departure. The timing of her trip, coupled with pre-existing concerns about budget cuts to the Los Angeles Fire Department, has fueled public scrutiny of her leadership during this emergency.

Aftermath of the Los Angeles wildfires

The LAFD chief had previously warned Mayor Bass about the potential impact of budget cuts on the department's ability to respond to large-scale emergencies. While Bass has acknowledged the need for a future evaluation of the city's response, she has denied that the cuts hampered firefighting efforts. Several prominent figures, including celebrities and former President Donald Trump, have voiced criticism of the handling of the wildfires, pointing to issues like inadequate forest management and empty fire hydrants. Trump is scheduled to visit California on Friday.
