Created: JANUARY 21, 2025

A 31-year-old man, Valdo Calocane, faces three counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder following a horrific attack in Nottingham, England. The incident, which began before dawn on Tuesday, involved both knife attacks and a van striking pedestrians.

Two 19-year-old university students, Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, were fatally stabbed near their homes. Ian Coates, a 65-year-old school caretaker, was also killed more than a mile away. After the stabbings, the suspect allegedly stole Coates' van and used it to injure three pedestrians, one critically. The attacks spanned a significant area of Nottingham, a city of approximately 350,000 located about 110 miles north of London.

Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable Kate Meynell described the charges as a "significant development" resulting from a comprehensive investigation. Calocane, who is listed as having no fixed address, is scheduled to appear in court on Saturday.

The two student victims, O'Malley-Kumar and Webber, were studying medicine and history, respectively. A planned graduation ball was canceled in the wake of the tragedy, and students gathered for a candlelight vigil at St. Peter’s Church. A larger vigil was held at the university on Wednesday, with thousands attending to pay their respects and leave flowers.
