Macy Petty, a college volleyball player, recently shared her experience with ChatGPT, alleging the AI chatbot exhibited bias when she asked it to condense a tweet about transgender athletes in women's sports. Petty, who plays for Lee University, explained that her original tweet aimed to defend the exclusivity of women's sports, drawing on her own experiences as an athlete. She believes certain phrases she used, such as "robbing girls of their chance to play" due to "male inclusion," may have triggered ChatGPT's response.
According to a screenshot Petty shared on Instagram, ChatGPT responded by acknowledging her desire to keep girls' sports exclusively for girls but stressed the importance of "inclusivity and equality in sports rather than promoting exclusion based on gender." The AI added that sports should be accessible to everyone, regardless of gender.

Petty sees this incident as reflective of a broader bias within the tech industry, calling for increased transparency from companies. She expressed her frustration, stating, "I wish they were at least honest about it. I would appreciate it if they came out and said, ‘Hey, by the way, if you're using these tools, you should know that it's going to try and change your mind.’"

Interestingly, when Fox News Digital presented ChatGPT with a similar prompt using the same phrases, the AI generated a different tweet: "Male inclusion in girls sports denies girls their opportunity to play. #FairPlay." This discrepancy highlights the variability of ChatGPT's responses.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously addressed concerns about bias in ChatGPT, stating that the company is working towards a more neutral system. He acknowledged the platform's shortcomings and emphasized the ongoing efforts to align its behavior with user preferences within reasonable boundaries.

Petty, an ambassador for Young Women for America, has been a vocal advocate for preserving women's sports. She recounted having to compete against a male athlete who identified as transgender during her recruitment process and has testified before state governments on the issue.
OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
