Tlaib Criticizes Trump's Gaza Proposal After Declining to Endorse Biden-Harris

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

Michigan Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib has publicly condemned former President Donald Trump's proposition for the Gaza Strip following the recent conflict, urging support for a two-state solution. This follows Tlaib's previous refusal to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris's presidential bid due to the Biden-Harris administration's stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Tlaib criticized Trump's comments on the Gaza situation, accusing him of promoting “fanatical” ideas due to bipartisan congressional support for policies she deems harmful. Trump's proposal involved a U.S. takeover of Gaza and the potential resettlement of Palestinians. This criticism from Tlaib comes after her decision to abstain from endorsing any candidate in the last presidential election, a move that coincided with significant disapproval within her constituency regarding the Biden administration's policies in Gaza. Some Muslim leaders in her district, traditionally Democratic supporters, even endorsed Trump. One such leader, Bishara Bahbah, who chaired "Arab Americans for Trump," has since renamed his group to "Arab Americans for Peace," citing his disagreement with Trump's Gaza proposal. He emphasized the group's commitment to peace and opposition to the displacement of Palestinians. However, not all Democrats share Tlaib's perspective on Trump's proposal. Democratic strategist Julian Epstein suggested that Trump's plan, despite being controversial, offers a potential path forward for Gaza, while Tlaib's approach, according to Epstein, risks empowering Hamas. Epstein highlighted Tlaib's past advocacy for policies that have drawn criticism, including those that led to House sanctions against her.
