US Readies .3 Billion Military Aid Package for Ukraine's Counteroffensive

Created: JANUARY 24, 2025

The United States is preparing a new military aid package for Ukraine, estimated at $1.3 billion, as the country continues its counteroffensive against Russia. This package, sourced through President Biden's Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), focuses on providing weaponry directly from manufacturers, thus avoiding depletion of existing US stockpiles.

Reuters, citing unnamed US officials, reports that the aid will include crucial defensive and offensive capabilities. Key components include air defense systems, counter-drone technology, exploding drones, and a variety of ammunition. Specifically, the package is expected to include VAMPIRE counter-air defense systems from L3Harris Technologies. Additionally, Ukraine will receive loitering munitions, including Phoenix Ghost drones from Aevex Aerospace and Switchblades from AeroVironment Inc. A substantial number of counter-drone systems from Australia's DroneShield Ltd., along with accompanying radar, sensor, and analytical equipment, will also be provided.

While the Defense Department has not officially confirmed the details, an announcement is anticipated soon. This new aid package coincides with a virtual meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contract Group, an alliance of nations supporting Kyiv. If confirmed, this $1.3 billion package will be the eighth tranche of aid delivered under the USAI program, bringing the total to $12.1 billion since the program's inception.

Beyond the USAI program, a significant amount of additional funding remains available for Ukraine's defense. As of June 22nd, $1.7 billion was uncommitted under the fiscal 2023 Presidential Drawdown Authority, alongside $1.9 billion in remaining USAI funds. The total US commitment to Ukraine's security assistance since President Biden took office surpasses $42 billion, with over $41.3 billion allocated since the Russian invasion began last year. This comprehensive support encompasses a wide range of military equipment, including anti-aircraft and anti-armor systems, howitzers, artillery rounds, rockets, tactical vehicles, mortar systems, and vital medical supplies.
