New Jersey Lawyer Faces Additional Charges in Boston Rape Cases

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Matthew Nilo, a 35-year-old lawyer originally from Boston, is facing new charges related to a series of rapes that occurred in the city between 2007 and 2008. A Suffolk County grand jury indicted Nilo on seven counts, including rape, aggravated rape, assault with intent to rape, and indecent assault and battery. These charges come in addition to those filed last month, which included three counts of aggravated rape, two counts of kidnapping, one count of assault with intent to rape, and one count of indecent assault and battery.

Nilo's attorney, Joseph Cataldo, maintains his client's innocence and plans to challenge the government's case both legally and factually. The Suffolk County District Attorney, Kevin Hayden, confirmed that DNA evidence played a significant role in the new indictments, highlighting the collaboration between his office, the Boston Police Department, and the FBI. These new charges relate to attacks on four additional women in Boston's North End, where Nilo grew up. One of the victims was allegedly assaulted twice within an 11-day period.

Nilo was previously released on $500,000 bail and is required to wear a GPS monitor. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 13. One of the accusers, Lori Pinkham, expressed concern about Nilo's release, fearing he could pose a threat to the community. She recounted her alleged 2007 attack, claiming Nilo forced her into a vehicle at gunpoint. Cataldo has raised questions about the way the DNA evidence was obtained, promising to address these concerns in court.

Authorities used forensic genealogy and DNA analysis to connect Nilo to the assaults. At the time of the alleged crimes, Nilo was a college student. He later studied law in California and became a cyber attorney in New York City. Reports indicate he was engaged to be married just weeks before his arrest.
