Pinal County Elections Director Resigns Amid Political Pressure

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Geraldine Roll, the elections director for Arizona's Pinal County, has stepped down from her position after less than a year. In her resignation letter, Roll cited a politicized environment and accused county supervisors of attempting to influence the election process. She specifically criticized County Manager Leo Lew for not shielding her from what she described as attacks by Republican officials.

While the county acknowledged Roll's resignation and thanked her for her service during "challenging times," Roll herself pointed to a pattern of "ridicule, disrespect, intimidation, and attacks" on her character and professional ethics. She directly questioned the county's ability to conduct impartial elections given what she perceived as undue influence from a segment of the Republican party.

Roll, a former deputy county attorney, was appointed to the role following a series of election-related issues in the county, including missing races on ballots and ballot shortages at certain polling locations during the primary election. These issues predated Roll's tenure, and she had not overseen an election cycle herself before her resignation. Towards the end of 2022, the county discovered discrepancies in the ballot count, revealing a difference of approximately 500 votes between the certified results and the recount. This incident occurred in a county with a population of around 450,000. Recently, county supervisors had also shown interest in conducting a manual recount of a portion of the 2022 ballots.
