Richard Dawkins Resigns from Atheist Foundation Over Censorship of Article on Biological Sex

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Renowned biologist Richard Dawkins has parted ways with the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), a prominent U.S. atheist organization, following the removal of an article defending the biological basis of sex. The article, titled "Biology is not Bigotry," was written by FFRF member and biologist Jerry Coyne in response to a piece questioning traditional definitions of womanhood. Coyne's article directly challenged the notion that gender is solely a social construct, asserting that biological sex is determined by gamete type. The FFRF removed Coyne's article after facing criticism from pro-transgender activists, citing the article's incompatibility with the organization's values. Dawkins, in his resignation letter, criticized the FFRF's decision as "an act of unseemly panic" and accused the foundation of succumbing to pressure from activists. He also expressed disappointment in the FFRF's treatment of Coyne, a fellow board member, calling the removal of the article without notice "an act of lamentable discourtesy." Coyne himself resigned, condemning the FFRF's actions as "censorious behavior" and describing gender ideology as "quasi-religious." Psychologist Steven Pinker also resigned from the FFRF, accusing the organization of imposing a "new religion" with its own dogma and heretics. The FFRF's co-presidents defended their decision, stating that their support for LGBTQ+ rights is not a deviation from their mission. Dawkins has been a vocal critic of transgender ideology, stating in a 2023 podcast that biological sex is binary and determined by gametes and chromosomes.
