President-elect Donald Trump has selected Ronald Johnson, a former ambassador to El Salvador, to be his ambassador to Mexico. Trump shared the announcement on Truth Social, emphasizing Johnson's collaboration with Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio in advancing "America First" foreign policies. Trump praised Johnson's previous work in El Salvador, highlighting his efforts in reducing violent crime and illegal immigration. Johnson, with a background in the CIA and as a U.S. Army Green Beret, will assume a significant diplomatic role within the Trump administration.

This appointment comes amidst Trump's threats to impose tariffs on Mexico if the country doesn't take stronger action to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking across the U.S. border. Similar tariff threats have been directed at Canada and China. Trump expressed confidence that Johnson will contribute to addressing migrant crime, stemming the flow of fentanyl and other illicit drugs, and enhancing national security.
