In a tragic incident of seemingly random gun violence, Eina Kwon, a 34-year-old Seattle restaurant owner, was fatally shot while eight months pregnant. The incident occurred Tuesday at a downtown intersection near her establishment, Aburiya Bento House, a popular sushi restaurant she co-owned with her husband near Pike Place Market.
Surveillance footage reveals a man approaching the Kwon's vehicle and firing multiple shots into the driver's side before fleeing. The attack appears unprovoked, with no prior interaction between the suspect and the victims evident in the video. Kwon's husband, Sung Kwon, 37, also sustained a gunshot wound to his arm and received medical treatment.
Tragically, medical professionals delivered Kwon's baby at a hospital, but the newborn did not survive. Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell expressed his condolences, highlighting Kwon's role as a community leader and business owner. He also noted having spoken with Sung Kwon, describing him as a grieving yet resilient father and husband navigating immense pain while recovering from his injuries.

Law enforcement swiftly apprehended a 30-year-old man matching witness descriptions. Upon being approached by officers, the suspect reportedly declared, "I did it, I did it." He allegedly claimed to have seen a firearm in the Kwons’ car and reacted by shooting. He is currently being held on suspicion of homicide, assault, and unlawful firearm possession, with formal charges anticipated this week.
The community has responded with an outpouring of support for the Kwons, who also have a toddler. A memorial of flowers and tributes has grown outside their now-closed restaurant. A crowdfunding initiative to assist with bringing Kwon's family from Korea to the United States for the funeral has already raised a significant amount. The Kwons established Aburiya, known for its traditional and fusion sushi offerings, in 2018, quickly gaining popularity among tourists and local workers.
