As Texas prepares to enter the SEC in 2024, the conference's officiating coordinator, John McDaid, has clarified the rules surrounding the "Horns Down" gesture. He confirmed it won't be an automatic penalty, but will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
McDaid explained that unsportsmanlike conduct must fall into one of three categories: taunting an opponent, mocking the game, or hindering game management. He emphasized that the context of the gesture, such as whether it's directed at an opponent or done during a team celebration, is crucial in determining whether it constitutes unsportsmanlike conduct.
This approach will also apply to other team-specific gestures like the "Gator Chomp" and "Land Shark." The "Horns Down" has been a contentious issue, with the Big 12 often penalizing it. Big 12 officiating director Greg Burks stated last year that the gesture's appropriateness depends on when, how, and to whom it's directed.
Last season, Alabama coach Nick Saban reprimanded one of his players for using the gesture after a victory against Texas. Saban emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and respecting opponents' traditions. He reiterated this message on his radio show, urging players to make responsible choices and uphold a high standard of conduct.
Texas and Alabama are scheduled to meet again in Week 2 of the upcoming 2023 college football season.
