Second Bus of Migrants Arrives in Los Angeles from Texas Border

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

Another bus carrying migrants from Texas arrived at a Los Angeles church on Saturday, marking the second such arrival in recent weeks. Forty-one individuals, including eleven children, were transported from Brownsville, Texas, to St. Anthony’s Croatian Church. The migrants represent eight different nationalities, including individuals from Cuba, Belize, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. Upon arrival, they were greeted by community members and support organizations.

Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, the largest immigrant rights organization in California, affirmed their commitment to providing a compassionate reception for the new arrivals. She emphasized the importance of coordination and preparation to effectively assist these individuals who have faced challenging journeys. Salas connected their arrival with the upcoming Fourth of July weekend, highlighting the migrants' pursuit of a better future.

The first bus arrived at the same church on June 14th, also carrying approximately 40 migrants who had crossed the Southern Border. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has taken responsibility for these transports, framing them as a response to the federal government's handling of the border situation. He has stated that these efforts will continue until the perceived immigration crisis is addressed. The governor's initiative targets sanctuary cities, with Los Angeles being the latest recipient, following previous transports to cities like Chicago, New York City, and Washington, D.C.

Governor Abbott's actions have drawn criticism from some who argue that it undermines border security efforts. Texas DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez noted the unusual nature of this situation. The governor has defended his approach, arguing that smaller border towns in Texas are overwhelmed and that sanctuary cities like Los Angeles, which have declared themselves welcoming to migrants, should share the responsibility.
