Senator Tom Cotton is pressing the Secret Service for a transparent investigation into the cocaine recently discovered within the White House. He has sent a formal letter demanding answers to several key questions surrounding the incident.
The discovery of the substance, which tested positive for cocaine, prompted an evacuation of the West Wing. Senator Cotton's letter specifically requests information on the precise location of the discovery, emphasizing the importance of knowing whether it was found in an area where sensitive information is handled. He stressed that if security within the White House complex is compromised, Congress needs a comprehensive understanding of the vulnerabilities and the plan to address them.
The senator also requested a list of all individuals who can access the White House without undergoing security screenings. He inquired about the frequency of illegal drug discoveries at the White House, including whether such instances have occurred during security checks or outside the building. Citing legal statutes that empower the Secret Service to make arrests, Senator Cotton asked whether arrests are forthcoming in this case. He set a deadline of Friday, July 14 for the Secret Service to respond to his inquiries.
President Biden and his son, Hunter, were at Camp David when the cocaine was found. The initial discovery prompted a precautionary closure of the White House complex while the Secret Service Uniformed Division investigated the unknown substance. The DC Fire Department, called in for evaluation, deemed the item non-hazardous.
