Following a heated confirmation hearing, two Republican senators expressed confidence in Pete Hegseth's anticipated approval as the next U.S. Secretary of Defense. Senators Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) and Tom Cotton (R-AR) shared their perspectives on Hegseth's prospects for joining President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet during an appearance on "The Ingraham Angle." Mullin firmly believes Hegseth will secure confirmation with substantial Republican backing, asserting that Hegseth is the ideal candidate for the role. He commended President Trump's selection.

Mullin also acknowledged Senator Joni Ernst's (R-IA) endorsement of Hegseth. Ernst, initially hesitant due to Hegseth's past remarks about women in combat and sexual misconduct allegations (which Hegseth denies), ultimately supported his nomination after several meetings. Hegseth previously stated on a podcast that the U.S. should not have women in combat roles, arguing it reduces effectiveness and complicates operations. Senator Cotton anticipates Hegseth's confirmation and urged Democrats to avoid obstructing the process, emphasizing President Trump's right to have his chosen Defense Secretary in place promptly.

Cotton criticized the impact of "political correctness" and "social engineering" within the military, suggesting they have negatively affected recruitment and readiness. He argued that troops need rigorous, practical training to prepare for national defense, the kind of training Hegseth has experience with. Democratic senators questioned Hegseth about his leadership experience and alleged financial mismanagement during his tenure at Concerned Veterans for America and Veterans for Freedom. Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) specifically challenged Hegseth's qualifications, comparing the Senate Armed Services Committee to a board of directors unlikely to hire a CEO with Hegseth's background.
