A Connecticut man residing in a Florida Airbnb was fatally shot by a Volusia County Sheriff's sniper after an extended standoff involving over 200 rounds fired at neighboring residences and law enforcement. The suspect, identified as 56-year-old Joseph DiFusco, was reportedly a "snowbird" possibly using firearms brought from out of state. Sheriff Mike Chitwood indicated DiFusco's family had expressed concerns about their safety prior to the incident, fearing his behavior due to reportedly discontinued medication and sleep deprivation.

The incident began around 4 a.m. with DiFusco reporting suicidal thoughts, though he refused medical assistance. Two hours later, he allegedly opened fire on neighboring units and responding officers. Sheriff Chitwood described the scene, recounting the sound of bullets whizzing past deputies positioned 100 yards away. Previous visits to the condo complex by deputies were also noted.

Negotiations proved futile as DiFusco continued firing upon any attempts at communication. Neighbors were evacuated as the situation escalated. The standoff lasted over five hours, ending with DiFusco barricaded in his rental unit, armed with at least three firearms, before being neutralized by the sniper. Images from the sheriff's office reveal the extent of the damage, showcasing the condo's exterior riddled with bullet holes.

No other injuries were reported during the incident.
