Special Counsel Jack Smith's Trump Investigations Exceed Million in Taxpayer Costs

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

The investigations led by Special Counsel Jack Smith into former President Donald Trump have likely incurred costs exceeding $50 million, according to Department of Justice spending reports. These investigations, which were recently dismissed, spanned approximately two years.

Publicly available financial disclosures reveal that Smith's office spent around $9.25 million between his appointment in mid-November 2022 and March 31, 2023. Spending increased to about $14.66 million over the subsequent six months, and from October 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024, the office spent approximately $11.84 million. These figures encompass both direct and indirect expenses, with the latter provided through various Justice Department agencies.

While expenditure reports for the period between April 1, 2024, and September 30, 2024, are still pending release, based on the average spending of the previous reporting periods (around $12 million), the total expenditure likely surpasses $50 million, as previously reported by Newsweek. This estimate excludes any costs incurred after September 30, 2024.

Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith in November 2022 to oversee the federal investigation into Trump's alleged 2020 election interference and his handling of classified documents. Following a nearly two-year investigation, Smith filed motions to dismiss the cases against Trump, citing procedural standards related to prosecuting a sitting president.

While the judge in the election interference case agreed to dismiss the charges, a decision on the classified documents case was pending as of Monday evening. Trump responded to the judge's decision, characterizing the investigations as “empty and lawless,” and criticizing state prosecutors and district attorneys for their pursuit of charges against him.
