Former President Trump's attorney, James Trusty, engaged in a heated exchange with ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos on Friday, following Trump's indictment concerning his handling of classified documents. Trusty contended that the Justice Department's actions against Trump were unjust, especially in light of President Biden's own documents controversy.
Appearing on "Good Morning America," Trusty insinuated that the Justice Department was pursuing Trump while overlooking Biden's similar situation. Stephanopoulos reacted strongly, questioning Trusty's assertion and deeming it "ridiculous."
The interview took place shortly after Trump announced his indictment, which he labeled as "election interference" and a "witch hunt." Trusty echoed these sentiments, suggesting Special Counsel Jack Smith was attempting to criminalize actions that lacked a criminal basis under the Presidential Records Act.
While Trusty outlined the details of the indictment, including the arraignment date, Stephanopoulos countered that the charges extended beyond the Presidential Records Act to encompass the Espionage Act, obstruction of justice, and false statements – charges he considered serious offenses.
Trusty then implied that the indictment resulted from pressure by the Biden administration, which he described as a "corrupt and politicized source" aiming to undermine Trump's candidacy. The discussion intensified when Stephanopoulos asked Trusty if he believed that no one, including Trump, is above the law.
Trusty retorted by bringing up Biden's document situation, arguing that Biden’s possession of unsecured documents from a SCIF years ago was a more serious offense. Stephanopoulos reacted with incredulity, questioning Trusty’s claims.
Trusty maintained that Biden's actions were more egregious than Trump’s, despite the differing legal responses. Stephanopoulos concluded the interview by expressing skepticism about Trusty’s evidence and thanking him for his time.
