A Living Laboratory for Innovation

Woven City serves as a real-world laboratory where inventors, residents, and visitors collaborate to test and refine innovations. Toyota envisions it as a hub for developing new products and ideas, focusing on autonomous vehicles, smart homes, robotics, and artificial intelligence within a meticulously planned urban setting. The ultimate goal is to transform Toyota into a comprehensive mobility company, addressing the movement of people, goods, information, and energy.

Location and Residents

Located in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, on the site of a former car plant, Woven City represents a symbolic shift from traditional manufacturing to future-oriented mobility solutions. The initial residents, primarily Toyota and Woven by Toyota (WbyT) employees and their families, are expected to move in soon, with the community eventually expanding to around 2,000 people, including inventors, residents, and visitors. Several partner companies from various sectors, such as food and beverage, air conditioning, and education, are already involved.

A Unique Street System

Woven City features a distinctive street system designed to optimize safety and efficiency by separating traffic based on speed and usage. The three types of streets—one for faster autonomous vehicles, one for mixed lower-speed mobility and pedestrians, and one exclusively for pedestrians—reflect the city's human-centered design philosophy.

Goals and Innovations

Woven City emphasizes "co-creation," bringing together diverse individuals to develop human-centered solutions for societal challenges. The "Woven Inventor Garage" provides access to cutting-edge technologies, including a "Digital Twin," a virtual simulation of the city for testing products before real-world deployment. Key innovations being tested include automated transport systems, smart logistics using delivery robots, and next-generation remote communication technologies.
