A Houston family is grappling with unimaginable grief after a suspected drunk driver claimed the life of their 7-year-old daughter and left her mother severely injured. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, December 1st.
41-year-old Joel Gonzalez Chacin appeared in court on Tuesday, facing charges of intoxication manslaughter in connection with the death of Ivory Smith, a second-grade student at Klenk Elementary School. Authorities confirmed Chacin's intoxication at the time of the crash, where he reportedly T-boned the vehicle carrying Smith and her mother, Christina Quainoo.

Instead of rendering aid, Chacin allegedly took photos of the wreckage before fleeing the scene. The victims were just minutes from their home when the collision occurred. Chacin's bond has been set at $150,000.
Harris County Constable Mark Herman offered condolences and requested prayers for the family during this holiday season.

A GoFundMe page established by the family paints a picture of Ivory as a bright and joyful child, whose loss has left an unfillable void. The family is seeking justice for Ivory while simultaneously facing the daunting reality of Quainoo's extensive recovery journey. They ask for continued support and prayers as they navigate this difficult time.
Quainoo's injuries are significant, and her recovery is expected to be lengthy and challenging. The GoFundMe page also emphasizes the need for support for Keion Smith, Ivory's father, who is also dealing with this immense loss.
