DoD to Eliminate DEI Programs, Prioritizing Merit-Based Opportunities

Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

The Department of Defense (DoD) is poised to dismantle its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, following a memorandum issued by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The memo asserts that DEI initiatives clash with DoD values and establishes a task force to oversee their removal.

Hegseth's memorandum outlines a plan to revitalize the American military, focusing on merit-based promotions and selections, eliminating quotas, and banning Critical Race Theory, gender ideology, and DEI programs. An executive order issued by President Trump reinforces this direction, prohibiting any preferential treatment or discrimination based on sex, race, or ethnicity within the Armed Forces.

The memorandum, addressed to Pentagon leadership, commanders, and field activity directors, emphasizes the DoD's commitment to providing equal opportunities based on merit, without guaranteeing equal outcomes. Decisions regarding hiring, promotions, and assignments will be determined by merit, departmental needs, and individual preferences.

The "Restoring America's Fighting Force" Task Force will supervise the elimination of DEI offices, boards, councils, and working groups, along with any remnants that undermine meritocracy, perpetuate discrimination, or promote radical ideologies.

Going forward, the DoD will not factor sex, race, or ethnicity into decisions concerning promotions, command positions, or special duties. Quotas and targets based on these characteristics will also be eliminated.

Military academies and defense academic institutions will emphasize the positive historical influence of America and its founding documents. The U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Air Force Academy confirmed their commitment to implementing the President's executive orders.

The Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness will receive progress reports on these changes, with an initial report due by March 1 and a final report by June 1.
