McCarthy Hints at Garland Impeachment Inquiry Over Hunter Biden Allegations

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy suggested that impeachment proceedings against Attorney General Merrick Garland could be initiated if allegations from an IRS whistleblower concerning the Hunter Biden investigation are substantiated. These allegations have intensified scrutiny on Garland, particularly after the emergence of a 2017 WhatsApp message purportedly from Hunter Biden to a Chinese businessman, referencing Joe Biden and demanding payment.

Speaking on "Fox & Friends," McCarthy stated that if the whistleblower's claims prove accurate, impeachment inquiries into the attorney general would commence. He expressed deep suspicion regarding the financial dealings of the Biden family, highlighting the creation of companies during Joe Biden's vice presidency and the alleged receipt of payments from foreign entities. McCarthy questioned the lack of traditional business infrastructure for these companies and the flow of funds to family members who seemingly had no involvement in their operations.

The controversy centers around claims made by IRS Criminal Supervisory Special Agent Gary Shapley Jr., who oversaw the Hunter Biden investigation. Shapley alleges the IRS obtained a WhatsApp message from Hunter Biden to Henry Zhao, CEO of Harvest Fund Management, in which Biden appears to leverage his father's presence to pressure Zhao into fulfilling a commitment. Hunter Biden's attorney, Christopher Clark, dismissed these claims as misleading, politically motivated, and potentially based on a misrepresented document. Clark emphasized Hunter Biden's struggles with addiction during the period in question and asserted that any questionable actions were solely his own, unconnected to his family. He also pointed to the extensive DOJ investigation that concluded with Hunter Biden taking responsibility for tax and firearm charges, suggesting that the investigation was thorough and impartial.

Responding to the allegations, a White House Counsel's Office spokesperson reiterated President Biden's non-involvement in his son's business dealings.
