NY Kindergarten Gender Identity Curriculum Sparks Controversy

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

A gender identity curriculum taught to kindergartners at Hillside Elementary School in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, has ignited a firestorm of debate. The curriculum, designed to promote inclusivity, introduces concepts like cisgender, transgender, and non-binary through images of children. The school emphasizes that the lessons focus on respect and understanding diverse identities, not sex education.

The curriculum's description explains that students observe pictures of children and discuss their perceptions, leading to an introduction of vocabulary related to gender identity. It also touches on the evolving nature of language used to describe gender as individuals learn and grow. Hastings-on-Hudson Union Free District defends the program, stating it aligns with New York State's Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework and has been in place for several years. Superintendent William S. McKersie clarified that the 30-minute lesson is taught once annually in each class by a certified educator.

The curriculum gained widespread attention after LibsofTikTok, a social media account known for its commentary on progressive ideologies, shared the parent message. This sparked criticism, with some arguing against the appropriateness of such topics for young children and others voicing support for early exposure to diverse gender identities. New York City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino expressed concern over the focus on gender identity while core academic skills may be neglected. Kemberlee Kaye, managing editor of Critical Race Training in Education, advocated for removing children from public schools in response to the curriculum.
