Following a subpar season, Paris Saint-Germain has replaced head coach Christophe Galtier with former Spain and Barcelona manager Luis Enrique. The announcement came Wednesday, with Enrique's introduction at a press conference shortly after Galtier's dismissal. Club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi stated that Enrique's arrival signifies a "new cycle" and a shift in playing style.

PSG expressed gratitude for Galtier's "professionalism and commitment" during his tenure. Galtier's assistants, Thierry Oleksiak and João Sacramento, were also let go. This marks the eighth coaching change for PSG in 12 years under Qatari ownership, and Kylian Mbappé will now play under his fifth coach since joining the club in 2017.

Luis Enrique had been out of contract since Spain's exit from the World Cup in 2022. He initially took charge of the Spanish national team in 2018, aiming to rebuild the squad after their disappointing Round of 16 exit in Russia. A personal tragedy forced him to step away temporarily, but he returned in 2019. During his time with Spain, Enrique guided the team to two Nations League semi-finals and the semi-finals of the European Championship. His previous stint at Barcelona was even more successful, culminating in a treble-winning season with the Champions League, La Liga, and Copa del Rey titles.

While Galtier secured another Ligue 1 title for PSG, the team's early exits from the Champions League and French Cup, coupled with a decline in form post-World Cup, marked his tenure. Despite being unbeaten before the World Cup break, PSG suffered 10 losses in 28 games in 2023. Mbappé's league-leading 29 goals were crucial in securing the title by a single point ahead of Lens. The team's vulnerabilities in midfield and defense were exposed in their final match, a 3-2 loss to Clermont.

Off-field issues also plagued Galtier's time at PSG, with allegations of racist and anti-Muslim remarks during his time at Nice leading to a trial date set for December. Galtier joined PSG last July after leading Lille to a surprising Ligue 1 title over PSG in 2021, breaking PSG’s dominance in the league. Since the Qatari takeover in 2011, Carlo Ancelotti stands as the only PSG coach not to be dismissed, leaving for Real Madrid in 2013. The abrupt dismissal of Antoine Kombouaré in December 2011, despite PSG leading the league, established a pattern of frequent coaching changes over the past decade.
