Veteran Chef Andre Rush Partners with USAA to Combat Veteran PTSD and Suicide

Created: JANUARY 25, 2025

In observance of PTSD Awareness Month, former Master Sergeant Andre Rush, a retired Army veteran and former presidential chef, is collaborating with USAA on their "Face the Fight" initiative. This program aims to increase awareness and support for veterans grappling with PTSD and suicide prevention.

In a recent interview, Rush stressed the urgency of addressing veteran PTSD and suicide, emphasizing the importance of open discussions. The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs reports that 7% of veterans experience PTSD at some point. Rush believes that now, more than ever, it's crucial to bring this issue to the forefront.

The "Face the Fight" initiative is a joint effort between corporations, foundations, and organizations committed to raising awareness and support for veteran suicide prevention. The goal is to reduce the veteran suicide rate by 50% before 2030.

Brandon Carter, USAA Executive Vice President, praised Rush's involvement, stating that his personal experiences and dedication will inspire other veterans and help destigmatize mental health challenges.

Rush, who served 23 years in the military, including during the 9/11 attacks and the Iraq War, has personally witnessed the devastating effects of PTSD and suicide. He channels his experiences into his culinary work, finding solace and a coping mechanism in cooking, a passion he shared with his mother.

Rush's dedication extends beyond the kitchen. He performs 2,222 push-ups daily to honor the estimated 22 veterans who die by suicide each day. He emphasizes the importance of service, both in the military and in everyday life, and encourages others by saying, "If I did it, you can do it."

USAA's initial $41 million grant for "Face the Fight" will fund various programs, including clinical fellowships, resources for veteran service organizations, and suicide prevention training for veterans.
