Created: JANUARY 27, 2025

In a candid revelation on his podcast "The Why with Dwyane Wade," the three-time NBA champion shared details about a significant health challenge he faced in December 2023. Wade underwent surgery to remove 40% of a kidney, a procedure that led to a surprising cancer diagnosis.

The discovery began with a full body scan that identified a concerning "cyst/tumor" on one of Wade's kidneys. This prompted doctors to recommend kidney surgery. Wade, now 43, explained that he had not prioritized regular doctor visits for physicals in the past. However, persistent stomach issues, cramps, and difficulty urinating finally led him to seek medical attention.

He described his experience, recalling his concern about his urinary issues and the subsequent diagnosis after the kidney surgery. The news of the cancerous tumor significantly impacted Wade, leaving him feeling vulnerable.

Wade expressed that this period was the first time his family, including his father and children, witnessed him in a weakened state. He described it as the "weakest point" he had ever experienced, admitting that it was a struggle to show this vulnerability to his loved ones. However, he acknowledged the necessity of accepting support during this challenging time.

While Wade did not disclose details about his current health status, he reflected on his basketball career and other ventures. Retiring from the NBA after the 2018-19 season, he holds the Miami Heat's all-time records for points, assists, and steals, notably earning the NBA Finals MVP title in 2006. Beyond his playing career, Wade became a part-owner of the Utah Jazz in 2021 and a minority investor in the WNBA's Chicago Sky in 2023.
