The 2024 Olympics saw Imane Khelif's boxing gold medal win become a global talking point, leading to a surge in online searches. Google's 'Year in Search' data reveals Khelif as the most-searched athlete, surpassing even prominent figures like Simone Biles, Jake Paul, and Mike Tyson.

Khelif's participation sparked controversy due to allegations of having XY chromosomes, typically associated with males. The boxer's victory, despite previous disqualification from the 2023 championships due to gender eligibility concerns, fueled the debate further.

A key moment in the controversy was Khelif's match against Angela Carini. Carini's tearful withdrawal after just 46 seconds, citing the sheer force of Khelif's punches, drew significant attention. Carini later stated, "I didn't give up, but one punch hurt too much. And, so, I said ‘enough.’"

The International Boxing Association (IBA) President, Umar Kremlev, previously stated that Khelif had been disqualified from the 2023 championships based on DNA tests indicating XY chromosomes. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and President Thomas Bach defended Khelif's inclusion in the Olympics, asserting compliance with all eligibility criteria.

The controversy extended beyond the sporting world, with even President-elect Donald Trump commenting on the Khelif-Carini bout during a rally, referencing Khelif's alleged transition. Khelif subsequently criticized Trump for speaking "without a source" and filed lawsuits against several individuals, including Elon Musk and J.K. Rowling, for alleged cyber harassment.

Khelif also threatened legal action against a French journalist for a report alleging the boxer had testicles, stating, "We will meet with the French journalist in court."
