Mahomes Defends NFL Officials Amidst Controversy Over Questionable Calls

Created: JANUARY 26, 2025

Following a wave of criticism surrounding perceived preferential treatment by referees during the Kansas City Chiefs' divisional playoff win against the Houston Texans, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has spoken out in defense of the officials. The contentious calls, primarily two roughing the passer penalties against Houston, sparked outrage among fans and players alike, with some suggesting bias towards Kansas City.

During a recent podcast appearance on "New Heights," Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, while acknowledging the widespread debate, playfully invoked his right to remain silent on the issue. His brother, Jason Kelce, however, didn't hold back, labeling one of the penalties "completely, absolutely ridiculous." He added, "He didn't even get touched. I understand why they called it. I just think it was a bad call."

Mahomes, in contrast to the public outcry, has consistently maintained his support for the referees. In response to questions about potential favoritism, he stated, "I don't feel that way. At the end of the day, the referees are doing their best to call the game fairly. We just focus on playing the game and accepting the results."

In subsequent interviews, Mahomes reiterated his stance, emphasizing that scrutiny comes with consistent winning. "I've learned that if you win, there will always be discussion around the calls, regardless of how the game unfolds," he explained. "I try not to focus on it. Every game has unique circumstances, and the referees are trying their best to make the right decisions. It's the players making plays that ultimately determine the outcome."

He further elaborated, "There might be a call here or there that people disagree with, but there are many other plays that significantly impact the game's result." Head referee Clay Martin addressed the controversial calls post-game, citing "forcible contact to the face mask area" and Mahomes' "hairline" as justification for the penalties.
