Following a five-day nationwide search, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione has been apprehended and charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The charges, filed late Monday night in New York City, also include criminal possession of a weapon (loaded firearm), possession of a forged instrument, and possession of a firearm silencer. Thompson, 50, was fatally shot on December 4th outside a NYC Hilton hotel just before a shareholder meeting. He had been appointed CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021.
Mangione's arrest took place in Altoona, Pennsylvania, at a McDonald's. An employee and a customer, recognizing Mangione from a wanted poster, alerted the authorities. Officer Tyler Frye approached Mangione, who was using a laptop while wearing a mask and beanie. Upon being asked to remove his face covering, Mangione was identified as the suspect in Thompson's murder. He allegedly presented a fake ID and gave a false name, subsequently exhibiting signs of nervousness when questioned about recent travel to New York. Authorities also reportedly discovered writings critical of the healthcare industry and a ghost gun similar to the one suspected of being used in the crime.
While in custody in Altoona, Mangione faces charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm, providing false identification to law enforcement, and forgery. His family expressed shock and devastation upon learning of his arrest. Mangione's cousin, Maryland State Delegate Nino Mangione, declined to comment, and the family requested privacy while they process the news. They offered prayers for the Thompson family.
Mangione is a graduate of the Gilman School in Baltimore, where he delivered the 2016 commencement address. He also holds bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and was a member of the Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society for Electrical and Computer Engineering. A former classmate expressed disbelief at the news, describing Mangione as a seemingly intelligent and well-behaved individual.
